Why a blog? Why now? Why metal?

After jumping in and throwing up a post, I figured it might be worth attempting some kind of explanation. Truthfully, I was somewhat reluctant to start writing and posting material for anyone and everyone to potentially see. I mean, it seems like everyone and their dog (or cat, or any other pet) has a blog. So really, it’s nothing special, nothing unique. Generally that doesn’t sound too appealing to me.

Then again, if everyone and their dog has a blog, why shouldn’t I have one too? That’s where the dilemma comes in. So, taking a bit of a leap, I finally decided to just go ahead and do it. I’ve always enjoyed writing. I’ve certainly done enough of it over the years. Everything from short fiction, to poetry, opinion pieces, formal research papers and every kind of essay imaginable. Having been absent from writing purely for myself for some time now, I figured it was time to revisit the idea. I’m capable of writing both objectively and subjectively, and you’ll likely find both in this blog. As much of the content will probably be my opinion, and will not have undergone the kind of scrutiny I would put into a research paper, it’s not to be taken overly seriously.

Why choose to write about metal music? The simple answer is that it’s high on my interest list. I’ve enjoyed metal in some form or another for over ten years. It started with a slightly unhealthy obsession with hair metal, with a side of classic rock. Whether you consider bands like Motley Crue, Guns N’ Roses, Def Leppard, Poison and Ratt to be metal is a completely different story. I suppose classic rock and hair metal were a decent place to start. From there, it moved to artists like Iron Maiden, Ozzy Osbourne and W.A.S.P.. After that, onto harder and heavier stuff with a little bit of gothic rock thrown in.

I’ve explored various metal sub-genres, picking a smattering of artists I enjoy from several of those sub-genres. For the last few years, folk/viking/pagan/heathen metal has been my most obvious preference. (As a side-note, I’m not into endlessly classifying metal artists into sub-genres, but that’s the most accurate description I can provide). As somewhat of a disclaimer, I’m not versed in the technical side of music, therefore I do not pretend to be an expert in it. I know what I like, and try to attempt to find an explanation as to why I like it.  Therefore, I won’t be over-extending myself into this area.

In the interest of making an attempt at some kind of synopsis and explanation for what I envision from this blog: It will be an outlet for my creativity (or lack of), focused around one of my interests.
