Obituary: "Violence"

As many are aware, Obituary will be releasing their latest work titled ‘Inked In Blood’ at the end of October. A single from the album, “Violence”, was recently released to precede ‘Inked In Blood’.

As far as death metal goes, I’m more of an old-school Swedish death metal fan, but I do like a few American death metal bands and I have been listening to a bit of Obituary lately. I am very tempted to make the three hour trek to see Obituary on the Swamp Leper Stomp tour with DTA, Massacre, Untimely Demise and a few others. I’ve obviously taken a few minutes to listen to the new track.

“Violence” has a bit of a thrashy feel to me. That being said, I’m not incredibly familiar with Obituary other than the ‘Cause of Death’ and ‘Slowly We Rot’ albums. Either way, I’m digging this track. It’s definitely more motivation to figure out a way to catch them live.

Bloodbath - "Unite In Pain"

Within the last twenty-four hours, Bloodbath has released “Unite In Pain”, a track off their upcoming release titled ‘Grand Morbid Funeral’. Within the last ten days, they also announced their new vocalist, which had been cause for much speculation. Revealed as Nick Holmes of Paradise Lost, he provides the vocals on the upcoming album. Former Bloodbath vocalists Mikael Åkerfeldt and Peter Tägtgren have left big shoes to fill as both are widely considered to be masters of the genre. Bloodbath is, after all, a band filled with stellar musicians.

While I’m not familiar with Paradise Lost, other than having witnessed an excellent set at a festival, I may have to look into their earliest releases which fall into the death metal style for comparison. While I am not yet quite used to Nick Holmes vocals on this track, after a few listens, I think ‘Grand Morbid Funeral’ could be an album that I will enjoy. Without listening to the entire album though, I am finding it difficult to form a solid opinion of the vocals based off “Unite In Pain”. Perhaps they will grow on me, or perhaps I will feel that the shoes can’t quite be filled. Only time will tell for this one.

Check out “Unite In Pain”

Bloodbath has also made available several pre-order packages for the upcoming album, found here:

Recent Video Releases

I caught these two in the last several days:

Amon Amarth
“Deceiver of the Gods”
From ‘Deceiver of the Gods’

This video, while containing the epic-ness typically found in Amon Amarth videos, comes at a perfect time in regards to promotional value. Amon Amarth is currently touring, and watching this video makes me more stoked to see them again. Produced in conjunction with, and containing clips from Northmen: A Viking Saga, it also creates a bit of a buzz for the movie. Perhaps some clever marketing took place, but really, what Amon Amarth fan was going to skip this movie anyway?

Cannibal Corpse
“Kill or Become”
From ‘A Skeletal Domain’

Considering it completely slipped my mind that ‘A Skeletal Domain’ has already been released, this is my first audio exposure to the latest Cannibal Corpse material. It definitely sounds like Cannibal Corpse to me, although the vocals may be a little bit less harsh than on some of the earlier albums, which would not be a bad thing. (Or perhaps I’ve been exposed to a lot more death and extreme metal since first listening to Cannibal Corpse). While the video isn’t entirely unique, it’s what I’d expect, with a lovely little bit of gore for all of those morbid death metal and horror loving fans out there. It probably won’t have me running out to buy ‘A Skeletal Domain’ anytime in the very near future, but it suffices.

Machine Head Cancels Tour

Machine Head has recently decided to cancel their tour with Children of Bodom, Epica and Battlecross. The excuse given is that Machine Head needs time to put the finishing touches on an upcoming album. The band explains that post phoning the tour is the best decision in order to properly finish the album.

The question then becomes whether this is truly a good decision. I doubt the people who had already purchased tickets for any of the various tour dates agree. I doubt fans of the other bands on the bill are impressed. I doubt Machine Head fans are overly impressed. I’d rather wait a little longer for an album release in exchange for seeing a band live. Alexi Laiho, Children of Bodom frontman, is clearly not satisfied with the decision. He states that the band will now use the time to work on their next album. Children of Bodom certainly didn’t feel the need to cancel a tour to do so.

While I wasn’t planning on catching this show, I can empathize with anyone who was. Being a long-time Children of Bodom fan, I was slightly disappointed when the tour was announced in the first place as I am not a fan of the venue in my city, nor am I a Machine Head fan. I couldn’t justify the ticket price considering these factors. That being said, the fact that Machine Head couldn’t present a more compelling excuse for canceling an entire tour, screwing fans out of seeing the other bands on the bill, is somewhat pathetic. One has to wonder if the true reason is different, such as poor ticket sales in some markets or egos getting in the way. Either way, it’s the fans who lose in this situation.

Drug Bust linked to the Studio Music Foundation

This last week in Edmonton has seen the Studio Music Foundation in the news for all of the wrong reasons. The Studio, for those who are unaware, is a local venue that has hosted many up-and-coming bands, as well as a some more established artists. Located in an industrial area of the city, the building houses the Studio on the main floor.

From what I can gather, the drugs and cash were seized from an office on the upper floor of the building. The promoter, who runs the studio (from my limited understanding), has apparently been included by fact that his name is on the building lease. While I do not personally know anyone involved, it appears that the media misrepresented the story. At least in the original press and TV news releases. Whether this was negligence or an attempt to create a more sensational story, or whether misrepresentation truly took place, this is something that the reader should decide upon considering the available information. One thing that has not been made clear is whether drug-infused baked goods were being sold out of the Studio itself. It was implied in some of the first news releases, but later releases suggested this was not the case. The police have not directly addressed this, other than to say the operation took place in the building, which houses more than one business. There is no indication that the baked goods in question were offered for sale at the Studio’s concession during concerts in the venue.

If the Studio itself had no direct involvement with the sale of drugs, other than the misfortune of being in the same building, this is a shame for the music community in Edmonton. Without having any inside sources, I tend to believe that this may be an unfortunate situation for the venue. I’d like to give the promoter interviewed and those that are involved with the Studio the benefit of the doubt in this case, as most people involved in the local music scene are genuinely trying to do something good for the community of musicians and music fans. That being said, drugs are prevalent everywhere if you know where to look and it shouldn’t come as a real surprise to hear of a drug bust almost anywhere (without referring specifically to this case).

While I’ve only been to the Studio a handful of times for shows, it would be a shame to lose it. The location was somewhat different, which personally, I found refreshing. You didn’t have to deal with the crowds and lack of parking present at other venues located downtown. The only people in the area during a show were like-minded; there to listen to live music. As a venue, the Studio comes across as pretty rudimentary. There is nothing fancy about it, other than a decent stage set-up, but that tends to be part of the charm of going out to see local up-and-coming bands. As mentioned in a few of the articles, it is one of the only (if not the only) venue that still had the capability of hosting shows with minors allowed. I’m long beyond the point of personally caring whether minors are allowed into a venue or not, but from a wider perspective, this would be a huge loss. Many of these bands looking to get their start have minors as band members, and many of the music fans of today (and tomorrow) will inevitably gain their love for music before they are legally old enough to enter a bar. It will be interesting to see exactly how this situation plays out. Hopefully the outcome can, in some form or another, reduce the harm already done to the Edmonton music scene by this event.

Bloodbath: New Album

Like many others, I'm eagerly anticipating this upcoming album release from Bloodbath, titled 'Grand Morbid Funeral'. It appears as though it will be a November release date.

The new vocalist will be announced sometime next week. Either way, if the previous Bloodbath albums are any indication, this will be a good one.

Northmen: A Viking Saga

I hope this movie will be as good as it has potential to be....
