Kataklysm & Belphegor to Tour North America
Waiting for the dates to be announced for this tour is almost an anxiety attack waiting to happen. Personally, Kataklysm and Belphegor on the same bill represent the potential for a bone-crunching night of metal. I've seen Kataklysm numerous times, but they are one of the bands that I could see every time they come through town. I've yet to be disappointed by a Kataklysm show, or album, for that matter.
As for Belphegor, I've recently rediscovered why I was initially so drawn to this band. 'Conjuring the Dead' really piqued my interest again and is up there on my list of one of the best recent releases I've listened to. The only time I've seen Belphegor was in the fall of 2008 when they supported Ensiferum and Amon Amarth (and what a wicked show that was). I've been anxiously awaiting another live show, and the opportunity to pick up some merchandise, since.
While I'm definitely praying to the metal gods for this tour to make a stop near me, this is one that I might even seriously consider travelling the thirteen hours by road to Vancouver for.
Entrails - "Beyond The Flesh"
A few days ago, Entrails released "Beyond The Flesh" as a teaser track for their upcoming release titled 'Obliteration'. I like what I'm hearing. It's the same brutal, old-school sounding, Swedish death metal that I love. While some seem to have an issue with the revival of sound similar to old Entombed, old Grave, old Unleashed etc, this is a style that I will never bore of. Entrails is been one of my most listened to band for some time now, and I can't wait until this album comes out in May.
From the MetalBlade newsletter, summed up pretty eloquently:
Swedish death metal overlords, ENTRAILS, will unleash the putrid fruits of their newest studio offering this May via Metal Blade Records. Fittingly dubbed, Obliteration, the follow-up to 2013's Raging Death full-length was tracked by guitarist Jimmy Lundqvist at his own "Bloodshed Studios" and mixed and mastered by legendary musician/soundsmith Dan Swanö (Edge Of Sanity, Bloodbath, Aeon, Hail Of Bullets etc.) at Unisound. Featuring ten mangled tracks of sonic malevolence, Obliteration carries on the torch of true, old school Swedish brutality.
Comments Lundqvist: "Finally, we can unleash this beast named Obliteration to the fans out there, this time with a more driven and raw style that shall taste good to everyone's ears if you're into the older simplified death metal that we prefer to play. Recorded in our own Bloodshed Studios and mixed by the mighty Dan Swanö nothing else but slabby Swedeath can be served."

Currently I’m looking back at the posts on this blog and I’m angry. Angry because I haven’t wrote much interesting or useful for some time now. I haven’t posted much lately at all, in fact. It feels as though I’ve been too busy with other things to be able to commit the (relatively short) amount of time it takes to post something other than mindless rambling. I’m also frustrated because I haven’t had much motivation to write. Usually I enjoy writing, but lately it has began to feel more like a chore than an enjoyable hobby. I would guess this is due to the fact that my other commitments at the moment require a significant amount of writing (that I don’t necessarily want to do).
I have not even listened to much music lately either. Sure, I’ve acquired several albums in the last while, but I haven’t taken the time to truly listen to them. Ideally, I would like to sit down and listen to a newly acquired album start to finish, with no distractions. Perhaps even going through the lyrics at the same time, if they are available. I used to relish in the random little tidbits or facts that I picked up during the process of reading about, and researching bands, sub-genres, musical influences etc. I miss the quasi-philosophical, beer-filled discussions that used to occur on a pretty regular basis between my metal-head friends.
Some days I still feel the drive for the relentless pursuit of discovering and re-discovering metal. Take Belphegor, for example. I’ve had Belphegor albums in my possession for years now, but never really appreciated the band as much as I have since ‘Conjuring The Dead’ was released last year. The first Belphegor album I bought, mostly on a whim, was ‘Bondage Goat Zombie’, when it was first released in 2008. Taking the time to really listen to ‘Conjuring The Dead’ made me re-think why I hadn’t spent more time listening to Belphegor, and caused me to go back and re-listen to several albums I hadn’t given much consideration to in the last few years. The result: I’ve re-discovered what drew me to the band in the first place.
I used to love going to concerts. I still try to enjoy concerts, but lately I’ve found them to be more lack-lustre than in previous years. Excitement used to build for weeks beforehand, fueled by non-stop listening to whatever metal band happened to be coming through town. Often now, the excitement subsides by show-date, and sometimes dragging myself out of the house feels like a chore. And it shouldn’t. Participating in something enjoyable should never feel like a chore. Now it seems that I spend half the time I’m at a show considering all of the things I should have been doing instead. Or using the show to unwind by drinking way too much beer. Or studying the crowd composition and trying to figure out how and why it has changed so much in the last several years without sounding like a condescending bitch. Either way, I’m not usually paying as much attention to the actual show as I should.
I constantly struggle with finding the time to pursue my passions, and finding the time to accomplish the more mundane tasks and time-gobbling projects that I currently have on the go. I have no doubt this is something that most people trying to pursue an education (in the hopes of establishing a viable career) struggle with, but lately it’s been more of an uphill battle than normal. To those who have managed to find a balance between pursuing passions and ‘regular’ life, I throw you the horns.
Returning to the idea of this blog, I have ideas. I just need to find the time, energy, and drive to fully pursue them and produce a product that is worthy of publication. I want to be able to boot the rest of life out of the way to indulge in music as heavily as I used to. Until then, this is my rant.

Kataklysm - New Album in July
Canadian death metal masters, Kataklysm, have announced that their new album will be released worldwide on July 31st. This will certainly feel like a long wait, but Kataklysm rarely disappoints. I would expect more of the heaviness that Kataklysm always brings from 'Of Ghosts and Gods'. I'm looking forward to this one, and if you like no-holds barred, fast, death metal, you should be too.

Põhjast
This particular album falls into the category of one that I would like to get, but have difficulty finding. Ideally, I would like to order it while ordering other merch, but it appears that it will probably be a one-off type of order as it has proved quite elusive. It is difficult to even find much updated information about Põhjast. I enjoyed 'Thou Strong Stern Death', as it reminded me slightly of Bathory. I have heard that 'Matused' is also quite similar to later-era Bathory.
Speaking of Põhjast and merchandise, it would be nice to see a patch released, or perhaps a few shirts. Personally, I think the logo is one of the neatest I have seen. the cover of 'Matused' itself is also quite appealing.

Månegarm Re-Issues
I was quite excited to see the news that Månegarm shared the other day regarding their catalogue of recordings (from the band's Facebook page):
Although I have managed to track down most of their material, including Nordstjärnans Tidsålder, I am still missing two albums. This is definitely a welcome announcement considering that some of the Månegarm releases are actually quite difficult to get ahold of.
"Månegarm and Black Lodge records are very proud to announce that we will re-release all of Månegarms early albums. The plan is to have them all released before the end of this year; starting with the very first album "Nordstjärnans Tidsålder" set for release April 10th. All albums will be re-mastered and will come with exclusive liner notes from the band. An exclusive bundle-pack (CD + T-shirt with a brand new design) will also be available for each release in limited editions. The band says: "Finally we will get our old albums out in the stores again. We have gotten a lot of requests for these albums and now we can proudly tell you that the time has finally come! So don't miss this great opportunity to experience Månegarm in the early years; now in re-mastered shape along with some great new merchandise"

Farmageddon 2015 Line Up
Farmageddon Open Air has just released the line-up for this year's event, and it looks great! There is something for almost everyone present, including bands from several sub-genres and even a few burlesque and performance artists to add a little bit extra. There are several bands in the lineup that I look forward to seeing again, and a few that I'm interested in checking out for the first time. Incantation and Grim Reaper anyone?
This was a fantastic event last year, and I am hoping it will be the same this year. Being (somewhat) acquainted with some of the organizers and various band members of bands that will be playing, I know how much hard work and dedication goes into such an event. Fingers crossed for good weather, a great time meeting up with plenty of friends, cold beer and metal!
